Nerdy Massage Information.
I don’t always know if you like to read about what’s actually happening in your body but I like to know so I assume it’s helpful information somehow.
I’m constantly learning more about the nervous system. Understanding this system helps us know how to effect our overall health and well-being. And while massage is “rubbing muscles” some could argue that massage is actually “creating movement in tissue.”
Yes, we definitely rub muscles and work with tension in the fibers of the muscle. And that’s super important as we need our muscles to move us around the world.
We also know that massage therapy is a major role is stress relief, but why? Or more importantly, HOW?
Something I read recently explained a portion of the how.
The fight or flight response compresses the trigeminal nerve restricting sensory information to the brain. Parasympathetic response allows for sensory information to flow to the brain.
It is my belief that the sensory system of our bodies is crucial for our regulation and soothing systems. This is why we indulge in experiences like coloring, the beach, and eating delicious foods. The shower is where you have all of your best ideas because you’re engaging all of your senses. Need some inspiration? Engage your senses. Seeking pain-relief & healing? Engage or suppress your senses.
Children know. They seek sensory experiences and find soothing through their senses.
Hopefully this sparks curiosity and intrigued and you can begin interacting with your sensory systems in new ways.
