Why Mother Circle is for Mothers

Mother Circle is for Mothers. And other circles are for other people.

Something natural and beautiful happens when a birth happens. It doesn’t matter when or how the baby arrives, the mother is forever changed. The mother will never not be a mother ever again. Our culture often focuses on the baby and it’s health and we overlook the health and well-being of the mother—much less the forever changed experience that just happened.

I remember having my first baby and looking around to see if anyone noticed what I just went through. I felt amazing and powerful and strong and everyone was focused on the baby, the milestones, the feeding etc. As was I, but I wanted someone to notice the strength of what my body just accomplished.

The importance of exclusive spaces in the time of inclusivity.

Inclusivity brings safety for a lot of people. It allows for the various expressions to show up and be warmly welcomed. That is important for the culture at large. Exclusive spaces also need to exist so there is a place for a group of people to recharge. When a space is identified and boundaries are clear, the specific group of people can orient themselves to the other participants that are going through similar experiences. When the people in an exclusive space (for example, mothers) know that everyone in that room is experiencing something similar, they can rest knowing they are being seen at a very baseline level.

Exclusive spaces do not mean we are not inclusive in other areas.

We’re just saying here, for this space at this time, it will be for this group of people. Being in a group of mothers identifying as mothers, allows mothers to have a felt sense of similar experiences. There’s no need to be concerned with the experience of non-parents or fathers. This is a special space for mothers. We need both exclusive and inclusive spaces. And my hope is exclusive spaces are for healing and growth and do not become pits of energy toward dangerous and hurtful rhetoric. In our Mother Circle, we will focus on the course content and it’s potential for growth and exploration.
