Questions Frequently Asked
I get asked this question all the time. What made you choose massage therapy? Why would anyone want to work in a dark, quiet room all day? I could never touch naked strangers all day… Your clients must be so happy to see you! They run the gambit.
My first career was working with horses. I taught riding lessons, managed horse farms, and showed horses in multiple states. It was very fun. And exhausting. And to be honest, I just wasn’t making enough money.
I was talking to my Aunt one day who works with horses but was also a massage therapist. She told me how much she loved her job and all the different avenues you can take with a career in the massage industry, including equine massage.
So, I decided to start looking into massage schools so I could add “Licensed Massage Therapist” to my Bachelor of Science degree in Equine Science. I found Elements of Wellness School of Massage in Creve Coeur, which in my opinion is the best massage school in the area currently. I was blessed with amazing classmates and even met my future boss and now business partner, Sara Newberry, through the school.
It turns out my first career working with horses is helping me with massage therapy every day. Horses taught me how to be hyper-observant, to be somewhat of a detective, and problem solve; to figure out what I can fix and when to seek medical attention. These skills come in handy in the massage room, since so many of us know that something hurts or isn’t right, but not what is causing it. For example, “my shoulders hurt” can be caused by a tension holding pattern where the shoulders creep up to the ears. Or it can be caused by hunched shoulders working at a desk all day, which shortens the muscles in the front of the shoulders and stretches the muscles in the back of the shoulders. Additionally, a huge part of what I do as a massage therapist is to understand what I can help you fix and what requires medical attention.
I love massage therapy so much and I feel so blessed to be on this career path. I love being my own boss and running my own business, even if it is more work. I love being in a quiet, dark room with soothing music as it helps keep me calm and centered. I love connecting with people and figuring out how to help their bodies feel better. But most of all, I love seeing my clients regularly, talking about life and making them feel better while they do the same to me through their kindness.
If you haven’t been in to see me in awhile, please contact me so we can get you on my table. I look forward to seeing you soon.
